Alas, we soon would be free from the monopoly of the .com and .org domain names on the internet and we soon would be having cool domains like .google, .apple, among hundreds of others.
ICANN( Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) approved of this change as far back as June 2011. Last year,applications were made with each application costing no less than $185,000 (29.5 million naira) which was used for technical and extensive reviews on the proposals. 1930 applications were recieved.
This suffixes would be global, that is even Arabic and Russian domains would be allowed. I'm sure we all have our feelings about this, let us see the good side to this;
Companies with big brand names like Glo could apply dot-brand sites,this will help Glo market themselves and to protect
customers from spammy sites. For example, Glo could warn that a
purported online banking site isn't legitimate unless it ends in
.Glo.
On the bad side, this influx of domains could be confusing to internet users, as at now, if one forgets a site he crammed up all he has to do is try out the few .com, .org, .net domains but with numerous domains in place how would one develop the patience and stamina in trying out each of them all?
Also another problem this poses is that a fraudster or 419 could fake a domain name with a legitimate brand name requesting for personal details and the unsuspecting internet user would give out private informations..just like that!
"You can't just walk in and get one of these domains," White said. "We created this new space in the context of what's already out there -- so we looked at cybersquatting issues, we looked at security problems, and we tried to make a new field that's better."
Guess what? Google wants .lol domain... lol!
