My childhood dream was to become a
medical doctor, however, upon applying to the school of Medicine, I was
instead accepted into the University of Benin City to study Crop
Science. In my second year, I wanted to switch to the department of
Microbiology, but sadly, after accepting me into the department, it did
not work out and I was made to return to the department of Crop Science.
I did not stop there, I took the jamb examination for the second time
passed, and took the post UME. However, I was 2 marks short of the cut
off point for Medicine, scoring 138 of 140. Shockingly, when I got my
admission letter for the second time, I was given the same Crop Science.
I accepted it and decided to do well in whatever I studied, as I was
taught. My efforts were rewarded and I graduated with a first class
degree with a G.P.A of 4.52 and was awarded the best graduating student
in the department, in 2010.
I traveled to the United States to
further my education in the sciences and graduated with my Masters
degree in Microbiology with a 4.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. I plan to attain a
Ph.D in Microbiology and begin a lifelong career in research.
A 4.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale is no Moi-Moi, so I decided to contact her and see if I could extract a little interview from her...
- Could you shed more light on how to apply for a masters degree
program in the states from Nigeria, best way to go about it, the dos and
don'ts of it all. This is something I easily can
check up online, that's true, but it would be better if explained by
someone who has passed through the hurdle herself[you].
The process is not bad if u are determined to go
through it it. I would say I had it easy because my cousin here did all
my applications for me while I was in Nigeria, therefore it was not as
arduous. First of all you need to narrow down the colleges you would like to
attend and the course you want to study, then you process one.
I would advise to look for a school that offers scholarship cos it is very expensive to school here...unless you can afford to pay out of pocket. make sure u go through the admission requirement for the school you want to attend in order to know what you must have. When you take your GRE/GMAT and TOEFL you can then apply to the schools u send ur results to. If they accept you, then you can go ahead to apply for visa and stuff. It is a long process, but it is worth the while. Success!
-You said schooling there is very expensive, like how high is it, specifics?, Did you get to do your NYSC before leaving?
Yes you have to do your NYSC before you can get a
visa. Expensive, as in about 9000 dollars per semester [1.4 million naira] for 3
classes....that's what I paid. It all depends on the school though.
-Many students also want to achieve the same feat as you did, care to share some advice?
lol! Thanks! It is all God...and dedication
P.S... I had to keep the interview short, you don't get an outstanding result like that and organizations won't make you busy, I'm sorry if I did not ask questions you might have wanted to ask her...
